
POSTURE OF THE PATIENT DURING ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT

The POSTURE of the patient during acupuncture depends on the area to be needled.
At all times, the patient should be comfortable and needling should be carried out with the minimum of pain or discomfort to the patient.
It is always preferable to have nervous patients, old and very ill people to ly down rather than seated when administering acupuncture
Acupuncture master too, should assume a comfortable position when needling.
The common postures are
1. Sitting postures:
i) with knee flexed and spine resting on the back of a chair.
ii) with elbow flexed, hands resting on a table in front.
iii) with hands on a table in front and head resting on hands.
2. Lying down postures:
i) Supine ( facing upwards )
ii) Prone (facing downwards)
iii) Recumbent (Lying on a side, left or right recumbent), as convenient
iv) Lithotomy (lying down facing upwards with hip and knees flexed )
v) Genu-pectoral or knee-elbow position.
Facing downwards with the weight on the elbows and the knees.
Acupuncture masters make sure that the most comfortable position for each patient,compatible with the points selected is adopted.
